When I insert a column in a table in a Word document, it will push the other columns to the right and off the page. I've just been resizing the inserted column to get them back on the page, but can somebody please tell me how to stop this happening in the first place? Thanks.

When you insert a table from the Table menu you can put a check mark in front of AutoFit to window. Your Table will then resize automatically when you insert columns. This is a feature for viewing tables in a web browser no matter what size the window is. If you change your page to Landscape the Table will automatically widen to fit the width of the page.

Word 97 is not quite as sophisticated as later versions.
-To insert a column, select the column to follow that which you will insert.
-right-click the highlighted column
-click 'insert column'
-the new column assumes the width of the highlighted column
-the new column is selected
-click Table, cell height & width
-enter a width for the new column
-cl o.k.

Another option would be to split a column:
select a column
click Table, cl Split Cells
to split in half, click o.k.

You might want to experiment with the Table toolbar.
you can select all columns then click the 'distribute columns evenly' button
or, to stretch one column only, select the column
hold the cursor over a dividing line until you see a horizontal two-headed arrow
click and drag it over
double-click it to make the column fit the text
