The first battery was known as the "Voltaic Pile"; invented in 1800 by Alessandro Volta.

A Voltaic Pile is an alternating stack of zinc discs, copper discs, and felt or cardboard pads soaked in sulfuric acid. The acid reacts with the zinc and copper, producing zinc sulfate, hydrogen gas, and creating an electric current.

The unit of "electrical potential," the "Volt" is named after Volta. Increasing the number of discs in the stack increases it's "Voltage." A large series of voltaic piles can produce hundreds or thousands of volts.

Volta's invention was "sparked"(pardon the pun) from a debate between Volta and his friend Luigi Galvanni. Galvanni had discovered that if you touch a pair of connected zinc and copper rods to the legs of a frog, the frog's muscles contract, and a faint electric current is produced. Galvanni though that the electricity was produced by some kind of "electrical fluid" in the frog's body, while Volta proved that the it was produced merely by a reaction between the zinc and the copper...

Volta invented them back in 1800 doing experiments with chemicals and by digesting frogs as well.
