First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.

First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.

Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Follow the instructions on the label Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. I WOULD NOT put any chemical in the vacuum bag or catch container, other than a flea collar. It is too dangerous to risk the vacuum accidentally spreading that chemical through the air. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. You can never vacuum too much DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.

Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.

Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet

It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

Over the counter flea stuck sucks and is dangerous. You need Frontline but do not apply it until 30 days has passed since you applied the Hartz or she will get very, very sick. In the meantime, you can give her a Capstar [from a Vet]pill orally which will kill adult fleas but not the eggs. To get rid of them in the house, you need to have the carpets treated by a professional cleaning company that does flea treatment. Know that after the initial treatment, they should come back 2 - 3 weeks later to treat again. It should be part of the cost. You need to ask about this to be sure no misunderstandings. Honestly, since she is so old and you only want her in the house for the sake of your 1 year old [not because she means so much to you] who doesn't know a thing about what a dog is, is shameful. No offense.

First off Hartz is horrible. You can search it online and find all the horror stories of it not working and actually making pets sick/sicker/die.

Second find a place where your dog can stay for a few days. Completely bath her. Dawn dish cleaner works well and zodiac does too. fill up a bath and keep her in the bath for atleast five minutes sitting in water and the parts of her that are not in the water covered in suds. Rinse her off and use a comb to get all the fleas off, which should be killed from soap or drowned by now.

Try using Advantix or Frontline, you can get both from a vet.

Third take her to a friends house to stay.

Completely vacuum the whole house. If you have a vacuum that uses a bag use a new bag.

Every cloth you can throw in the was. Clothes in hampers, bed sheets, pillow covers. Everything.

Spray your back yard. I generally don't advice using chemicals but in this situation you really need to.

Things like couches I would get a portable steamcleaner and clean all the parts you can with it, also use a hose from your vacuum and try and get all the hard to reach parts the steam cleaner couldn't get.

It takes a while to do but they will be gone and it will be worth it for your dog and your family

Do not use the Hartz. Aside from causing a lot of deaths, the stuff doesn't work. Don't use anything from a pet store, because it isn't going to work. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work. That includes house treatments.

Go in to a vets for some proper treatment. Frontline, Advantage, Revolution and Advocate are all treatments that work. You shouldn't bath before applying any spot-on because it will wash off the skin's natural oils that the spot-on needs to work - you'd have to wait 48 hours after bathing before you could apply the treatment.

You could maybe get a Capstar tablet from the vets to give 1st, since they kill fleas the fastest (within a few hours) but they're not a preventative so you'd need to get a spot-on to apply regularly too. Get a spray from the vets too for your house.

I feel for your little dog. You need a plan of attack. There is a organic product that is safe for humans and animals. It is messy because the end product is very fine grain. The product is called Diatomaceous Earth. It is finely grounded up sea shells. You would spread and work the product into rug or carpet. When the fleas/eggs come in contact with this product, it begins to dehydrate the fleas/eggs and the fleas/eggs dies. I never used this product in the yard, but I would guess there is no problem, just maybe not as affective because of the moisture from the ground. I used this product for years before Advantage or Frontline came out. My family nor my little dog had a flea problem when I used this product. I now use Advantage to control any flea problem, Whatever plan you decide, you will need to seriously consider performing your attack in one or two days. The life span of a flea is very short. You need to kill the adult and also any eggs. If you don't get the eggs, then the life cycle continues. Remember to wash bedding (yours, child, dog, etc.) and clothes. Good luck!

I wouldn't use the Hartz which are mostly pesticide products that are sometimes toxic to dogs- especially small ones. I'd advise getting your house professionally exterminated for fleas because that should come with a guarantee for a repeat treatment should the first process not rid you of the fleas. In the case of flea bombs, they are not enough sometimes as fleas will escape whereever possible, incl. inside of clothes hanging in closets.
At the same time you have the house treated, have your dog flea bathed (no dip or topical flea treatment). IF you want to do that yourself, do it at a neighbors or where ever you can while your house is being treated. Bathe her with a solution of Johnson's Baby Shampoo mixed with warm water. Use a sponge and wipe thoroughly around the face and ears and then the butt. After that, pour this solution on the rest of her body and scrub it in for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly and then use a flea comb or your fingers to pick out any fleas that didn't rinse out. The reason you start at the head then butt is because fleas will run to any oriface or place they can get into (nose, ears, eyes, mouth and rear) to hide from the shampoo or treatment.
Three days after treating your dog, you can get BioSpot from PetSmart or PetCo or a Feed Store. Check the date on the product. Use only exactly as instructed. More product than instructed of any flea treatment may not just kill fleas but could kill or sicken your dog.
Ask your Vet about whether it is okay to use Adam's Flea Spray on your dog when she goes out side and before coming back in. (to be sure it's safe in addition to whatever flea product you choose to use).
Get your Yorkie checked for tapeworms which are common in dogs with lots of fleas.

Hartz is crap & can be dangerous to animals.

you need to do it all at the same time.

you could use some capstar before using either of the others. get the vet to tell you how to use it but it will kill the fleas that are on her with in a half an hour however it has no residual action

get this dog on advantage or frontline pronto - give her a bath first in any kind of really frothy shampoo - it does not have to be flea shampoo. dawn dish soap is just fine.

Raid Plus comes in spray & bombs

There is a tiny pill you get from the vets called Capstar. They're real inexpensive and 1 pill kills all the fleas in a matter of a couple minutes. Then you house has to be sprayed inside and out. Ask the vet what is safe for animals. Now a days it's really not that hard to get rid of fleas.

Hartz isn't really a good brand. You might want to try Biospot spray. That worked for my dogs. And you can also spray it around the house on the carpet to kill the fleas. That is what I did, and it worked wonders. Just keep your son away from the dog and off of the floor for a day or so...so he doesn't accidently injest any of it. Hope that helps!

someone once told me it was a war on fleas... and let me tell you, it is!

Only one thing worked for me and my yorkie - CapStar!!

We got fleas from the neighbor dog and my dog brought them in the house. We powered everything. We bathed the dog in everything imaginable. We had the house and yard professionally sprayed. My dog was on Frontline. When we couldnt think of anything else, my (new) vet gave me a capstar pill. It's a small pill you can give your dog daily that kills all of the fleas on your dog within a matter of minutes - about 45. It says that it lasts about 24 hours. I LOVE this stuff!! It allowed us to kill a lot of fleas at once and finally get them out of our house. Our vet sells them for $5 a pill (!!!) but I found a nearby vet that would sell them to me for $2.75 a pill, so shop around.
