Bill - Buddy recorded 'Them Changes' as a solo artist before ever performing it with Jimi Hendrix.
The song was later covered by Jimi (with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox) live at the Fillmore East on the Band of Gypsie's album. Keep guessing!

Here's a hint: Prior to his stint with Buddy, this Canadian guitarist played with Wilson Picket.
It was actually Buddy Miles who referred him to Wilson! At several gigs (especially at the Apollo) it took the black audience awhile to accept this white Canadian boy, but once they heard him play...he was in!
This axe man also released what many hard rock aficionados refer to as one of the best hard rock albums of the early 70's with his own band from Montreal!

Doc Rock - I am referring to the original version of the song, that never appeared on the album.
The album appeared much later (as you said, 1970) with a different version of the song.
Keep guessing!
You should know this, because you and I have discussed this Canadian axman before!

Please read my entire question. The last line says:
...that is the song, not the album of the same name.
So your looking for the original single version of the song.

The real answer is Jim McCarty on extra takes of Electric Church. Jimi Hendrix played Them Changes in B.o.G. v1, after hearing it in the session he produced; Buddy Miles Electric Church. Although often miscredited to Charlie Karp from Buddy Miles "Live" where Charlie DID perform Them Changes. The Miles self-titled LP, Them Changes featured guitarist Jim McCarty from the B.M. Express. Jim is not from Canada; he's from across the lake from Windsor... Detroit.

My guess would be Marlo Henderson as he did a lot of "soul" session work. Dunno what his hard rock band was though. It wasn't Karp because he was from Connecticutt I think and that would leave Wally Rossonullo, and Them Changes was the only album that I am aware of that he was on. Jim McCarty, as far as I know, was from the Detroit area although he also did a lot of live session work for touring soul artists as they came through there.

"Band of Gypsys" was recorded '69 - '70 (New Year's Eve) and debuted In Billboard May of '70. Buddy's "Them Changes" lp debuted in Billboard on the fourth of July of 1970, for what it's worth(thanks, B.S.!) He may have been playing the song live as a solo artist prior to Band of Gypsys, but B.o.G. was the first actual release for "Them Changes" on vinyl as it was not on 1968's "Expressway to Your Skull" nor 1969's "Electric Church", which was partially produced by Jimi.
