2:Some traits are more suited to an environment than others.
3:Those traits that are less suited to the environment are killed off, and those that are more suited remain.
4:Those traits that remain are passed to offspring in greater numbers.

The starting point for Evolutionary study, fraught with 19th Century knowledge. He made some very good guesses. He did not have the knowledge that we do now. He even knew it, when he said he could not prove his Theory. We have come a long way since then.
