Yes dish washing liquid will take care of fleas. I had a kitten that I rescued that had fleas and it was to young to use flea control and my vet did recommend to use a mild dish detergent and warm water.
However it is only a quick temporary fix... Since your cat is 5 months old I would recommend a flea control such as frontline, advantage or advantix.

No, it doesn't work. All it does is wash the fleas away, and then maybe they'll drown - it's not an insecticide, it does not kill fleas. The cat will become reinfested once dry.

You need to go to a vets for some proper treatment. At 5 months of age, your cat is plenty old enough for s spot-on like Frontline or Revolution. Get some. Do not bath before applying, or it won't work. Make sure it gets on the cat's skin.

Do not subsitute proper treatment for anything from a pet store, this stuff doesn't work. Pet stores aren't licensed to sell the proper chemicals for flea treatment - anything you find in store is just going to be a basic pesticide that you can't expect to work.

You will probably also need to treat your house - again, don't use anything from a pet store.

Absolutely not! The chemicals could cause a type of dandruff or dry, irritated skin on the cat and could cause blindness if it is in their eyes! Two things that work are a good cat cleaning/bathing product from either your vet or local pet store like PETCO or PetsMart or your vet, and a flea collar like Frontline. A third choice that you should use is a flea comb that will remove any fleas and eggs that they lay. Be careful not to let the fleas jump on you, though!

Hmm... l don't think so. Unless on the box says it is good for animals, then don't use it. Go and buy FrontLine Plus For Kittens at a local pet store. But before you use that, buy a good KITTEN/CAT shampoo and bathe your kittens throughly. After you wash your kittens, use a flea-comb and comb your cats throughly. (Do this 3 times a day : Morning, Evening, and Night for best results! Keep using the brush for a week, then check if you see any fleas.) After you use the comb, put on FrontLine Plus for Kittens.
I wish you the Best of Luck!!!

PS. Here is a good solution, but try this only if the top doesn't work. http://www.earthclinic.com/Pets/cats.html

Any of the citrus dish soaps will kill fleas -- it's the citrus. My dog bath mix is 2 oz vinegar, about the same of glycerin, and about 3 of citrus dish soap. Put that in a quart bottle, fill it with warm water, shake it, and use it. Wet your animal under a sprinkler and cup your hand to put the soapy stuff on. Rub for a few minutes. It's good for the coat, and it kills fleas. Got the recipe off a dog care video.

I cannot say I've heard of Dawn dish liquid working on fleas, but Pert Plus does. I used it on my sweet baby boy when my vet recommended it. They say it's the gentlest choice for little ones but strong enough for big guys, too. It worked well and smells great--added bonus!

I've never heard that, but even if it is supposed to be effective, don't do it! Kittens' skin is very delicate and thin, especially at a young age. It's likely to get very, very irritated or even burnt from using something like that. bring them to the vet, or get a flea collar, or flea powder.

I also heard it is true. But, I would at least give your vet a call before doing anything. 5 months is too young fro many chemicals. maybe there is natural product out there. Also try asking a pet store or pet super market like Petsmart.

Good luck w/ your little baby:)

It will do a one-time kill but it won't keep them from coming back. You need Frontline Plus or Advantage monthly to keep them away.
