Windows Vista is a mistake, that is why Microsoft has extended XP for both support and retail sales.
Vista will sit along side Windows NT, Mellinium as consumer frauds to make Bill Gates even more wealthy.

Windows Vista actually sucks. It looks cool with the Aero and the gadgets on the desktop but its not that compatible. I bought Windows Vista:Home Premium (for $199.99 +tax) the day it came out and all my devices wouldn't work I had to go to all the web sites to download the drivers and still some devices like my one of my flash drives won't work in Vista. In addition I talked to computer technicians and Network administrators and they even said Vista sucks. Hopefully by the time Service Pack 1 is released (which I have no idea when but i'm hopeing soon) they would correct most of there bugs. Microsoft when they relase a windows they like to have it installed in a perfect enviroment with all there little Microsoft applications are installed but when the windows is launched the 3rd party developers have to figure out how to correct the issues. Also Vista is very memory hungrey and you need at lest 2GB of RAM for it to run really good, 1GB is fine but slow. To make a long story short stay with XP for a little while longer

Vista isn't really that different from any other windows and I don't know what it costs it came with my computer. I do like it though it has little things the other windows don't have called gadgets that stay on your desktop. You can get game gadgets, slide shows, weather and tons of other things but other than that I haven't noticed much of a difference from the xp that I used to have.

I like it.
It came preinstalled on a new laptop and I think it's a step up from XP. The instant search function makes finding files and starting programs a breeze.
Would I pay to upgrade my XP desktop to Vista?
No.
If you are considering an OS upgrade wait until you need new hardware and get Vista OEM. Or forget about MS and get a MAC. They've just released their new Leopard OS which I've never used so don't listen to me (but it does look cool).

Vista is excellent, if you need it. It is a large file, uses a lot of memory, does way more than you will probably ever need. The fact that you have to ask tells me you don't want Vista. WindowsXP is very popular. Microsoft has extended sales to about June 08. I read where Dell has ordered more PCs with XP because of demand for it.
As for cost, depends on the version:

I would like to warn you that it is a piece of crap. It was rushed out and has alot of bugs. Once you order a computer that has it, or put it on your existing computer, you cannot uni-stall it. I had to pay $300 and sent my comp. off to have the operation system removed. It was very expensive and really just came with a pretty box. The main issue I have with it is that I have many programs, games, ect. that I like to run on my computer and NOTHING was compatible with it. It was so frustrating. Save yourself some cash and stick with Windows XP it is much more user friendly.

I bought mine with my laptop, so the cost of it I can't be certain (I'd count on at least a few hundred though) but, as far as quality, it's not worth it.
I have to refer to the internet on an almost daily basis for help trying to use it and although it has some nice cosmetic qualities, over all it's not worth the hassle.
