Most I see are black, but I see many which are all kinds of pretty designs and colors. Are certain ones worn in certain places or at certain times?

No, color has no significance. The color of hijab depends on the wearer's personal tastes and their devotion. More strict Muslims tend to wear black (because of its plain look), while the majority of Muslims I've seen (and I've been to Egypt twice) wear all colors of the rainbow. I personally lean towards pastels or something that matches my outfit, my mom-in-law likes patterns and sparkly hijabs, and my husband's cousin likes bright colors and bold patterns (that match her outfit, of course).

Take a look at what we like, and the different styles people come up with:

As salaamu 'alaikym, my friend.

Insha'Allah, as a far as I am aware of there is no significance as to the color of one's hijab. The Muslimahs I have seen seem to coordinate the color of the hijab they are wearing with their other clothing. My daughter prefers white or pink ones (she is soon to be seven). I have seen many patterned and printed ones of virtually every imaginable color except red and orange.

Ma'a salaam.

There's no significance whatsoever. But hijabis will probably wear prettier hijabs for more formal events like eid and what not. But, thats what everyone else does (dress fancier for formal events).

All kinds. Usually they are custom made, depending on the woman, and their taste, set pf beliefs. Usually they consist of a pastelly color,(Sorry for such a lousy description). and may have some Arab/Persian/Turkish/Indian patterns.

None what so ever. Black scarf goes with any color of outfit. This is the only reason.
