You can put plants in the tank with them, but don't be surprised if the crayfish nibble on them. Crayfish are omnivores, so they'll eat both plant and animal material.

Crayfish breathe through gills, so unless you only keep their water level at a few inches, they need something for aeration. That could be an airstone (but as I mentioned, they can climb the tubing), or it could be a filter (they may also try to climb the uptake tube or the water return of these). Plants will help provide oxygen during the day (as long as there are lights on the tank), but at night, plants used oxygen and release carbon dioxide, so they shouldn't be relied upon as the only source of oxygen.

the easiest option to keep them in the tank is to use and internal filter or airstone with a screen cover like this: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/1230/product.web

An electrical cord can fit between the screen frame and the tank rim, or the screen can be cut in one coner just enough to allow air tubing to pass through.

You don't need a tube for the bubble stone, but you should have aeration and filtration for him. Take care of him like you would any omnivorous FISH.

I've never heard of anyone keeping them as pets.....
We always just filled a kiddie pool with them and boiled them up.

Sorry. Good luck though :)
