You will manage quite fine with a simple word in Portuguese and that is "obrigado" (when said by a male, " obrigada" when said by a woman) = thank you! Many of the Brazilians are quite nice and helpful (as you treat others, the same way you will be treated). Have a nice visit in Brazil! (A piece of advice: take a dictionary with you and be careful, there are thieves as in all over the world!) I just loved the Brazilians when I visited the country! (By the way many Brazilians understand Spanish.) The guy that answered before me had good words in Portuguese that you will find helpful.

You will do well with your Spanish, don't worry. People will easily understand you if you speak slowly - our language is quite similar to Spanish!

Buenos dias, buenas noches, buenas tardes, gracias, hasta luego, adiós, ¿cómo estás? are the equivalent of the many phrases people here listed to you - and it is quite easy for us to understand them all.

Remember, if everything else fails just say "Me gusta el fútbol, bebamos un poco de cerveza. Yo pagaré"
