Railroad employees pay into the RRTA, a parallel retirement system to Social Security with similar costs and benefits. Postal employees pay into SS along with all other federal employees hired since 1983.

Railroad employees are a bit different. They pay into the railroad retirement system. It is an oversimplification but the tax rates are about double those of social security and the benefits are also about double. If someone works for the railroad for a relatively short period of time, their wage credits can be transferred to social security.

I don't know about railroad workers but postal employees do. At least I have for the last 19 years.
