Funny you should mention that. We were just talking about that a couple of days ago. Several years ago my sister worked for a large hospital in Placerville and they had a dress up Halloween party. She had Edith Ann down so good that one of the doctors' filmed her. It seems he actually knows Lily Tomlin. He sent the film to her. She sent a really nice letter to the doctor and an even better one to my sister, saying she has never been so flattered in her life to have some one imitate one of her characters so well. By the way my sister took first place, which was a substantial amount of cash and a week long cruise for her and her husband.

I remember Lilly Tomlin aka Edith Ann aka Ernestine from Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In. As far as I know that's where those characters were debuted. Others on the show were Ruth Buzzi, Goldie Hawn, Judy Carne.
I don't remember ever having seen Lilly Tomlin on SNL, but she may have been. I remember SNL primarily from the days when Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Dan Akroyd, Bill Murray, Jane Curtin, etc., were regulars.

I loved Ernestine, the operator. Fussing at her buttons. Telling the phone repair dept that they were wrong to promise to do a repair on Tuesday. Should have said in January and made the home owners stay home for the whole month.

One ringy dingy. Two ringy dingies.

Laugh-In was where she originated the character, but Lily Tomlin still does Edith Ann and she did appear on SNL.

Ruth Buzzy (sp?) played the character who hit the old man with her purse.

Edith Ann was my favorite, too. I always wanted that huge rocking chair!

She's probably still sitting in her rocking chair, wondering where WE are & that's the truth!!!!

Lily Tomlin is a wonderful comedian! After her stint on West Wing she has sort of just disappeared!
