Well, you've heard the phrase "He idolizes ________" fill in the blank with the name of any musician, sports figure, actor or whatever.
When a person gets so caught up in the life and doings of someone else then it certainly takes the form of idolatry. Paul wrote that covetousness was a form of idolatry. So it isn't like someone has to have a carved image of some so called deity to engage in idolatry according to the Biblical definition of the term.

I think it is an escape for people against the life pressures of modern day living. Obviously some mirroring, peer pressure and heavy marketing by the industry profiteers. It has also been affected by economics - people have more spendable cash as wages increase and costs reduce. So idol worship becomes a easy substitute and easy emotional shift. Compare the depth of knowledge idol worshipers have for 'celebrities' to the knowledge gained of the bible for worshipers.

in religion the diety usually isues some sort of order, the judeo-christian diety issues the no idol worship,
punishes the priests of ba'al in 1 kings, etc.
deuteronomy references the killing of anyone who tries to persuade the hebrew person from jehovah god
i would think the fundamentalist christian would interpret anything that isn't 24 hours7days a week god worship would be sinful idol worship
the liberal chrisian would probably refer to it as unhealthy
the atheist such as me has a wife who got upset that i didnt know who elvis costello was
i dont give a smack who elvis costello is
anyhow
being a groupie to a christian is idol worship cause it distracts from worship of god itself

Putting somebody on a pedestal is idol worship, but these people know the idols aren't God,.. they are free of sin.

I asked a psychologist friend of mine why people were totally obsessed over me. She explained people look to charismatic people like myself to model themselves on as they find our very outgoing, extrovert , strong, talented, quick witted personality's something that is lacking in there own lives. This is why I hear it all of the time people telling me they wished they were me or they loved being around me and get very over protective or even jealous over me. It sort of creeps me out, only it's just something I have to accept and live with.

It's a heck of a lot closer to idolatry than what Catholics are sometimes accused of, I'd say.

Yes. You should ask yourself before you do anything, "Does my action glorify God?" Worshipping a celebrity does not glorify Him.
