I've often seen this particular insect. It appears quite common, but I never learned its name. It's got 6 legs and 2 antenna. It's back is flat, almost to the point of seeming to have no head (I'm not sure if it can fly), and at the back of its back is an upside down V in light read. It appears to move rather slowly, in what to humans would be a brisk walk, taking its size into account, which I'd estimate is 1-1.5 cm long, or maybe a half inch. Also, I live in NY state, where at certain times of the year they seem to be very abundent. I'm sorry I can't give much more specific information.

Not red upside-down V pinciers, red upside-down markings on its back, polly-pocket.

I hope I get the right answer before the time limit. I don't want to have to extend it. On the other hand, this question's far from the front page by now.

It's a good description, but it's hard to 'see' without a picture. The red ^ sounds like a bug, maybe a nymph, but beyond that I can't venture.
