Humans reproduce through sexual reproduction which means that characteristics from either of our parents' genes are combined in us in something like a random way. So, in each generation, this allows a lot of variation in all sorts of structures in the body: some people are born with thicker and some with thinner skulls.
If the skull is too thin though, that person will be more vulnerable to brain damage through any accident that might occur. Since brain tissue (in us and in animals) can't be repaired easily if damaged, if we suffer brain injury, we may well die or be incapacitated and unable to reproduce and therefore pass our own genes on to any offspring. The genes for a thinner skull won't do very well as a result.

If the skull were too thick, it might weigh too much and cause excessive neck strain without being statistically any more effective than a normal skull in protecting the brain. So a skull thickness is arrived at by evolution that becomes the 'normal' skull thickness.
Some people imagine that a god must have created us as we are, since our bodies seem so complex, but the idea of intelligent design is a very unintelligent one and shows extremely lazy thinking - the type that us humans do best.

The skull I'm sure was formed to protect the soft tissue of the brain from damage. Other wise the first time we bumped into anything we would have major brain damage. Even less advanced animals with less advanced brains have skulls.
