I am looking for a gift for him. I want to get something elegant that 20 years from now he'll be able to look at and remember his son got this for him when he turned 50. He doesn't tend to wear jewellery of any kind though. Any suggestions?

Yeah, a professional picture of you! A 70 year old most remembers his family....it's all that really matters other than the prized Porsche he's restoring (wink) or his golf game. Is there something about you he should be proud of, or have you shared something together....like hunting, love of a sports, something.....that the picture could represent. For example sports related have a poster or something of a team you share in the background and if you two used to threw the ball around, have a ball in your hand. A good photographer will be able to help you with this. Pictures jog memories, make it a good memory and a great picture.

I think the gift your father would appreciate most would be an album with old pictures. Get photos of him when he was younger up until now. You may also wish to include family photos of him before and after marriage (if he's married) and pictures of your uncles, immediate family and such, im sure you can think of something creative. Also, you can also enlarge and old wedding photo or an older family photo. Im sure it will bring him back good memories, also if you'd like throw in an other gift, it would make it that much better. At his age I think your father would value this more than material items. Hope I helped, Ciao

A nice watch ,or a professional photograph of your family. But to tell you the truth, the best and most cherished gift would cost you nothing but time and thought. Write him a letter in your own handwritting about all the things that you admire about him or all the great and cherished memories you have of your childhood. It will be the most meaningful gift he ever receives, and you won't have the regrets of waiting for his eulogy for him to hear it.

Lord you make 50 sound really old!!!! Aside from that--on hubby's 50th birthday our son arranged a party---I got the old goat out of the house and our son had snacks, pizza, beer, a birthday cake and all his Dad's friends here when we got home. It was a great time! He handed his father one expensive cigar and a bottle of Gentleman Jack and all was right with the world. I guess what I'm saying is the old cliche---its not your presents--its your presence.

Find out what activity he likes the most like golf and then learn how to do it and set up an outing, you pay and set it up, etc... Be sure to be on the lookout for keepsakes you can frame or whatever, or even a picture of you both on the green. Most dads want their kids to be interested in their hobbies.

Spend the money you intend for a gift and make memories.
Take him on a cruise and take lots of pictures, or take him to the colorado mountains, or to Costa Rica . ..
Any place where he can have a good time and make precious memories with you

It depends on your budget....how elegant? A grandfather clock would be pretty rad but very expensive if you can't split it up with siblings.

Go to Spencer's and get some of that "Over the Hill" joke stuff... unless he's sensitive about his age or something.

Maybe...

-a pet?
-Uggs?
-new shoes?
-a vase?
-a 50th B'day Mug?
-make him a card he'll keep?
-a gift card to his favorite store?
-a ticket to a rock concert to make him feel "young"?
-Books?

Hope this helps! Hope your dad enjoys his B'day!
