I was "in a mood" when I asked this one so it's going to a vote. Good luck!

Isn't that one of the most preposterous bits of nonsense in the bible? It must be inthe top ten, at least, and the bible is full of them.

No. In fact, God speaks to Ezekiel in chapter 18, and has some choice words on this subject. Many Judeans were complaining that they were being punished for the sins of their ancestors. The expression they used was "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the childrens' teeth are set on edge" (origin of the modern expression "sour grapes"). God (according to Ezekiel) says, "As I live, no more will this saying be heard in Israel." This is followed by a long and redundant condemnation of the belief that family members pay for the sins of one member.

Without laying down a bunch of alternate doctrine regarding punishment, yes, there are generational curses. Some actions have a wide effect.

My family is under one. From generations back.. it seems a cycle that we've gone through.

But God will not judge the family for the sins of one member.

God punished Adam and Eve because of their disobedience and their making themselves unavailable to Him. They chose to listen to another voice that was NOT holy and therefore losing their covering and connection to Him..;
Because of their actions, all of mankind who came from these first two people were also under the curse with which they were cursed. It was not God punishing everyone, it was the consequences and result of their NOT following God's original "blessing plan". It is the inherited consequences.
Now, IF the father of a family is a murderer, a thief, a shiftless drunkard, you know the entire family suffers from those circumstances and the results of his chosen behavior. God is NOT to blame for those consequences when He has provided every instruction and warning of such behavior and lifestyle..., even if the rest are innocent of the father's actions. Now we know about these "sins" of the father passing down to the children by inheritance: blood contamination (our blood is marked and the DNA is altered by certain sins /modeling of such sinful behaviors /spirits of death=demonic attachments because the father of a family is the gate-keeper, etc. It is NOT God's will for these things to happen, that is why He tells us how to live and be free. After mankind sinned and defiled themselves with sin and it's consequences (the wages of sin pays death), He sent us a Savior to take our death and pay our penalty and the devil blinds men's minds so they won't accept Him: Jesus of Nazareth, so they CAN be saved from this fallen world system.
Jesus didn't preach "unconditional love and forgiveness and tolerance" as so many say He did. He lived out those behaviors but His preaching message was REPENT for the Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand. That means turn around and go back to God.., why would He preach such a message? The kingdom of this world is doomed and will be destroyed.
God's message and His will is to SAVE everyone and only He knows how to do it. We know what to do because He told us to accept Jesus as our Savior and confess Him with our mouth AS our Lord and WE WOULD BE SAVED. That message makes most people angry and they want to fight about it. Go figure.
You and I may not DO what our parent's DO, but we are NOT innocent of sin.., everyone sins and needs a Savior and God has sent His choice of who that is. He WAS innocent.., now He is Lord and King.

Where did you get that idea? ...and where did you get the idea that God punishes people? I need a context here...

People punish people. Yes, innocent members of a family can suffer for the sins of one member...the relatives of a murderer suffer from their own pain and even sometimes suffer from the condemnation of other people...imagine how much the parents of the boys that killed those kids at Columbine must have suffered for the loss of their children and from all the accusations of others that blamed them for their children's mistakes? Innocent children suffer at the hands of abusive parents...and they sometimes even carry that abuse to their own children later in life. Children suffer from their parent's decision to divorce...a spouse (and the children) suffer when the other spouse decides to commit adultery. This isn't God's plan...he wants us to stop hurting other people...to put their needs ahead of our own. We are the ones that punish the innocent!

I believe that we are all responsible for our own sins. I feel in my heart that when something happens bad to a family member the first thing we ask is why did God allow this to happen to us, than we start pointing fingers on one another. God sometimes allow things to happen so he'll be able to draw us closer to him.

It depends upon what text you read. If you look to certain books of the OT, you will find that the entire family is doomed because of the actions of one of it's members. Those portions of the text says, "yes" to your question.

But I do not believe in all of that.

Evidently some people believe that way. Thousands of gay children are kicked out of their homes and disowned because their "parents" think that their kid's "abomination" is going to threaten the salvation of everybody in the house.

No. Sin is your own. And if one is part of that sin they need to confess to God and turn away from it. Jesus died for our sins, we are forgiven if we ask. Isn't that great!!!
