Dry undergrowth........... Santa Ana winds........ and Arson.

That's what is the cause.

But, you must understand the earth has always cleansed it self by fire. For millions of years it has happened.

We are now encroaching upon nature and are made when nature encroaches back.

The world is like a big dog.... and we are fleas...when she one day gets sick of us, she will shake hard and just set her self free of us.

It's largely a fire ecosystem. It has burned almost continuously for millennia. With the hot Santa Ana winds blowing it only takes the smallest spark to start a fire. The brush is so dry that it almost explodes when fanned by the high winds. Although it is suspected that one or two may have been set, the vast majority of the fires are triggered naturally. When humans moved into the area, many more were triggered accidentally by people. Sparks from vehicles, and careless disposal of smoking materials will trigger a fire that will spread very rapidly when conditions are right.

No theories needed - California burns due to natural conditions since the last ice age, October is the worst time, and with 70-100 mile an hour winds, burning embers light more fires as far away as if they were blown in a hurricane with the same winds.

All that is well known and documented to anyone that has ever lived in most of California.

I am a couple hundred miles away where the moutnains meet the valley floor, and this time of year the air just smells like fire (not smoke, there is none!), the same way when I was back east, it might smell like rain or snow.

I don't know why people insist on building homes in high risk areas where they can't even get home owners insurance. It seems to happen a lot with the wealthy.

I heard they suspect arson because of that very fact. I think 6 people are in custody now.
