Can you just tell me the basics?
Like..what is it?
How long does it take?
What happens after?
Do you have to stay where ever it is?

My boyfriend is looking into it and it really wants to know how i feel about it...he wants to join the national guard or something so he can figure out what to do with his life.

I have to spend this year away from him because of school and I was wondering if he did this if it would take him away from me for a while?

The training site is 30 miles away from me...just FYI

Q: what is it...?
A: They take your average citizen and turn him into a killer of bad guys in a short time.

Q: How long is it...?
A: Check with an Army recruiter. But I believe Basic is 8 weeks and then there is an additional Advanced Individual training. The length of time for AIT is different for each job in the Army.

Q: What happens there?
A: They teach you basic soldiering skills, marching, marksmanship, individual weapons training, hand to hand combat, physical training... then lunch. Day 2....

Q: What happens after?
A: That depends on the job, and weather he's Active Duty, Reserve or National Guard, and the needs of the Army.

Q: Do you have to stay?
A: Hell yes... and except for letters don't bother him while he's there.... not a lot of time to socialize when you have such a short time to learn to fight and kill the brutal bloodthirsty creeps we're now sending to hell.

Thanks for asking...
Douglas

Post Script: Thank your BF for defending my home, country and rights.

Its about 9-10 weeks long including reception and inprocessing.

He will only get to call about once a week if he does not get in trouble. You mostly write letters from BCT.

He will not be allowed visitors until graduation day, then no visitors again until after AIT. How long AIT is depends on what his job is.

He will be busy every day.

He has to stay there.

Things get easier at it every 3 weeks, it start our very strict and eases some every 3 week phase continuing into AIT.

Once he finishes training, its 1 weekend a month and 2 weeks a year unless he is deployed. Then its a year away. A lot depends on his job though.

The most significant thing I learned in basic was teamwork.
If you show your buddy you can and will help him and he can lean on you when it gets a little rough, see what you have created! A pal who will help you and who YOU can lean on when things get a little tough.
The Army wants it, they look for it, they help you develop it, and most of all, they reward it. You be a loner and you are doomed.

There is no room for a loner. The slightest thing you do wrong, EVERYBODY pays for it.
If you're only 30 mi away, you must live near Ft Leonard Wood, MO.

Enlisiting in the Army won't help him figure out what he wants to do with the rest of his life unless its staying in the Army. If he needs discipline, he'll get that! Basic isn't too bad as long as you keep your mouth shut, do what you are told and help others. Be a team player.

The others answered the other specifics pretty well.

You won't see him during basic training. And he will surely deploy as National Guard. So, if your young, I would examine the importance of the relationship. Not trying to be harsh, just honest.

It sucks. He won't much free time. He'll learn weapons, maybe breathe tear gas, do lots of pushups, and sometimes not get much sleep. Honestly, it would be fun if there wasn't a drill seargent yelling "Hurry up" all the time.
