General Bradley, last of the 5-star rank Generals.

Note to Neil: General MacArthur did not abandon the PI, he was ORDERED to leave by the President. Even generals follow orders. Plus, he kept his promise to the people of the PI and did, indeed, return to free the islands from Japanese control.

General (Vinegar) Joe Stillwell who commanded American and Chinese troops in China and Burma.
Also, Major General Orde Wingate of the British Army.
Both fought alongside their troops all the time.

Field Marshall Montgomery was an excellent general who was always very close to the fighting.

Patton was a forthright no-nonsense General and was always close to the front lines, but like like most generals saw no front-line combat during WW-2.
In fact, Eisenhower never saw any combat in WW-1 or WW-2, he was an administrator.

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel. He was one of the best strategists Germany has seen since the days of Helmuth Von Moltke (Senior, not his son). If Hitler had not wanted total control of the military and left the General Staff to conduct the war on their terms, you can bet that Rommel would have been their key tool to win the war. While Rundstedt would have probably remained in charge of the General Staff, he would have probably named Rommel as Army Commander in the West, the Fox on the Rhine if you must, and would have seen to it that the Americans and British would have not made it off the beaches of Normandy. It would have probably been a bad decision though, if he would have sent him to the East, where he would probably not have fared even as well as the German commanders who did command there. Rommel would have changed the course of the war, had it not been for Hitler's politics (and obviously Rommel's death).

Admiral Chester Nimitz. We have seen movies about other famous generals and admirals of WWII but I don't know too much about this great man who basically master-minded the naval battles and island hopping offensive against the Japanese.
