August to September is comparable to February and March in the Northern Hemisphere.
We've had exceptionally nice weather here for that season this year, but it's usually quite stormy and unsettled, with temperatures between freezing and about 10 Celsius in the South, and about 16 in the North, during the day.
Unless you love skiing, and want to come to Queenstown or Wanaka for it, you may want to reconsider your dates. It'll be just right for that, with lots of snow, and the fire places in the bars will be blazing, and it'll be real cozy up in the mountains.

august - september is NOT late summer in New Zealand. That time of the year is coming into spring - and probably still be quite cld in lots of places.

Please remember that New Zealand is in the southern hemisphere and that not everything in this world operates the same way as the USA.
