The IMAX system uses a special wide film, I believe it's 70mm. The film goes sideways through the camera and projector to increase the film area of each frame.
The system was invented by Canadians and I believe the first use of it was in the world's fair in Montreal in 1967. (I saw it there in 1973!)

It's not just a big film format, there are a lot of special technological enhancements in the projector, like a 'field flattener', a curved piece of glass that makes the film curve as it goes through the camera so it focuses better on the screen.

There's a good article about it on Wikipedia:

Do some research on the internet.
I believe it was a Canadian invention.
It uses film that's about 4" wide.
Film cartridges run horizontally instead of vertical.
