I need to find out what is going on with my body (long story) and my doc ordered a blood test. I want to make sure the test will be as accurate as it can be! Should I avoid any over the counter meds? Avoid certain drinks/food? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Unless your doctor gave you specific instructions, don't do anything differently than you normally do. They will probably ask you if you've taken any medications when you go for the blood test so you can tell them then.

my mom had a blood test but it was for cholesterol and she wasn't suppose to eat or drink anything for like 12 hours

You should check with your doctor. If it's in the morning, he/she might want you to fast (nothing before test).
