A/V usually stands for "Audio" and "Visual".

To connect your DVD player, Cable TV box, etc., to your television you usually need:

- At least 1 wire for the video
- At least 2 wires for the sound

Since there are 4 different types of video cables, and 3 or 4 cables that can carry audio - the term "AV Cables" refers to them in a generic sense.

Audio/ Video Cable. Its used to connect electronics to your tv. They normally have 3 different colors, and you match them to the tv slots.
