I understand that Canadian ranks but i still have trouble remembering the Americans -is there a way to remember besides just plane old memory (friend of mine got in **** - Canadian solider didn't salute an American officer one level above him, forgot the rank system...needless to say he remembers now)

Stars - the more of them, the higher the general/admiral
Bird - Colonel or Captain (Navy)
Leaves - Silver is higher than gold; Lt Col and Major or Commander & Lt Commander (Navy)
Bars - The more bars, the higher the rank. Silver is higher than gold; Captain, 1st Luietenant, & 2nd Lueitenant or Lueitenant, Lt Jr Grade, and Ensign (Navy)

The officer rankings are exact in wording, except we pronounce lieutenant as "left-enant", while they pronounce it as "lu - tenant". We have a Commodore instead of a Rear Admiral Lower Half. That's about it. The insignia, well, I'd recommend looking on wikipedia or so to try to memorize it.
