A garnishment for back child support can take up to 50% of your take home pay compared to 25% for other garnishments. I have a client who owes over $100,000 in back child support. He won't see a whole paycheck for years.

First of all IRS has nothing to do with child support, but when you file your Federal Tax Return, the Attorney General will have IRS offset your refund.
It is a shame that you were able to make kids, but can't make yourself support them. You must of forgotten that they need to eat to live, need shelter( a roof over their heads). And the Attorney General can and will put you in jail if the custodial parent pursuist it.

Also, they can hold up your passport or renewal of a passport until all back support is paid. Yes, they can get a garnishment against your wages, yes they can also get a judgement against your bank accounts and take your tax returns until it is caught up.

Well....depends what State you are in.
Garnishment is available in most, if not all, states.
Don't know about the tax return.
The US doesn't have a debtor's prison, so generally speaking, you can't be thrown in jail, but there is an exception. A court can reduce your back child support to a judgment, and order you to make payments, a certain amount toward current child support and a certain amount toward the arrearage. If you don't make the payments as ordered, the Court can throw you in jail, not for the debt, but because you disobeyed the order. It is for contempt of court.

They will do those things, but not necessarily before they arrest. You may have to serve jail time and pay additional penalties for making them take the money from you.

They can do any and all of the above. In addition, they can mess with your licenses (both driver's and professional.) I don't think they really want to put you in jail, because while you're in there, you're not working (i.e. not paying support). Also, be aware that they can take a greater percentage of wages than other creditors.

They might take other avenues to collect before arresting you, or they might just arrest you - it happens both ways.
