My husband has been with United Healthcare for years. I have been using Blue Cross but they do not cover maternity. If I get on my husband's insurance- am I going to have to wait to use it?

I realize the best thing to do is call the insurance company (which I will) but I am curious to ask the very knowledgeable folks here on Yahoo answers first :) Thanks for your help!

By the way, I am not pregnant yet. Just exploring options.

If your husband's insurance is group coverage, pregnancy cannot be considered a pre-existing condition, but you have to wait until open enrollment to be added. If you have just gotten married, you do not have to wait until open enrollment, but usually you must be added to the group coverage within 30 days of marriage. If it is an idividual coverage, then there will be a waiting period. This differs with each company.

You will probably have to wait for coverage for anything pre-existing, and that includes maternity if you are now pregnant.

If you had just married your husband, the scenario would probably be different. But, since you carried your own insurance, you are now joining his 'after the fact'.

Usually you can with no problem during an Open Enrollment period at your husband's employer. If it is at some other time, then there could be restrictions.
