I started having pain yesterday in my belly button and I would have excruciating pain when I bent over. Now, a day later, I've noticed that I have a dime sized lump under the skin in my belly button (not like a boil)...and I can't tolerate to even touch it now. In the past couple of hours, the pain has worsened to when I can feel it when I'm not even bending. Now the entire surface area around my belly button region is tender to the touch.

I have a doctors appointment on Monday but for now I'm concerned and wondering if I need o go to the after hours clinic or ER.

Is anyone familiar with these types of symptoms??

The symptoms that you have described sound very similar to what's known as a para-umbilical hernia. It probably feels as though it is actually worse than it truly is. If you think you need to see a doctor sooner than your appointment Monday, then by all means do so. Hernias are not uncommon and can be corrected usually through a surgical procedure. But surgical procedures aren't always necessary. I am more inclined to think you have a para-umbilical hernia. Your symptoms are classical of a hernia. Do go to an emergency room or clinic if your condition continues to worsen. I wish you the best and try not to worry. I say this all the time to patients who are fearful of the worse case scenario, "When you hear hoof prints, think of horses before zebras." I hope you feel better soon. Also DO NOT allow some of the answers on here frighten you. I have read answers on here that would scare a person to death and the ones who answered had very little or no medical knowledge. So keep things in perspective, Ok sweetie.

Sounds to me like a Hernia, i had one repaired in my belly button region a few years back, the doctor said it was small but i asked if it would get bigger and he said yes, i decided to get it fixed while it was still small and i only had 4 days off work, just a bit sore after the operation but big big deal. you'll be ok. don't worry about it too much. if you need an operation i mean.

Does it look like there is pus in it? (If it does have pus in it, don't squeeze it.)
Is it red?
Does your skin feel warmer at that spot than any other place on your body?

If it does, I'd recommend going to the after hours clinic or ER as it could possibly be MRSA or some sort of staph infection.

this same thing happened to me, however, i have mine pierced.
i went to the doctor today and they gave me some medication.
i also had to take my belly ring out. =(
the lump on mine started out small and hard but it didn't hurt. then over the week it got bigger and redder and more painful.
so i wouldnt go to the ER, just go to the doctor.
good luck!

it sounds like a small hernia, a rip in the abdomen wall that allows the intestine to try and squeeze through. If pain gets any worse or you start to have nausea or diareaha get to dr asap
