LOL.

A deity that allows suffering in this universe but then says there's no suffering in the next could just as easily spring a bait-and-switch trap.

Because God is Holy, therefore He cannot lie.
His Word states:
Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Since the Bible is the Word of God and God must abide by His own Word, those who call upon the name of Jesus must be saved.

His Word also says:
John 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

You fear that God possesses these negative, humanistic qualities; as if God were some kind of self-absorbed tyrant -- but remember, you were not forced to worship God on Earth; you were given a free will to choose.

This idea you hold "Worship God or God will send you to hell" is a slight misconception; were you to reject God you would have already steered yourself to hell, perhaps without realizing you have arrived there.

Remember, man was made in God's image; we thus each reflect God's infinite desire for love. But an infinite desire requires infinite satisfaction -- it can never be filled by something finite. Thus, were you to reject God (the infinite) instead to constantly search for a finite, Earthly solution; you will have already found your hell. It is much like a hole that you desperately want to fill; but you are never able to fill it.

But God has already offered himself to all of humanity, so instead of letting these fears consume you; you should instead rejoice that there is something much greater in store for those willing to accept it. And what awaits is a splendor that none on Earth can even comprehend.

And this I speak of is a pure gift; but you are certainly free to reject it on your own volition.

If God is your ever-present friend and comforter, then it's no problem. We are either drawn closer to Him through our understanding or reject Him.
It's probably a bad analogy but think of Him as your greatest sports hero or such...would you have a problem paying homage or praising that person forever by their glorious deeds in sports? As another post said, if it's a chore, then you've already decided. Heaven will only be joy and happiness forever.

For Christians, the mentality is like running a race. Once you cross the finish line, you have won and you don't have to do anything else.

Only it's the pearly gates as the finish line. Once you get in, they figure they won't want to be bad anymore and they have a guaranteed box seat on a guaranteed cloud.

Isn't that like totally child like thinking?

There is no pain in Heaven. Once you have been accepted into God's Heavenly home, it is for ever. Read the book of Romans in the Holy Bible and learn the truth.

Well, we know that it is possible to be kicked out of Heaven because that happened to Satan, so there is this distinct possibility that some people will be kicked out after judgment day. But once you have seen the glory of God, it is hard for me to understand why you would not worship him.
