I am really interested in Islam, but I am not a Muslim. I want to learn a lot about Islam, but not through the net. Can anyone suggest really good ways for me to learn about it. Please, don't say something like Read. I am looking for really good books or places etc. etc. Can I actually go to a Mosque and talk directly to a Imam? Is that aloud? Would it be insulting in anyway?

Asalamu Alaikum! Meaning peace be apon you. I'm very glad for you. If you want to become a muslim, feel free to go to a mosque and ask the Imam. But don't go in while they are praying. When they finish, you may go and ask the Imam. Ask him anything you want. Or you can read a book about Islam. I'd love to give you one, if I knew you, but since I don't, I am not able to.You have no idea how much I'd like to help you.
Also when you become muslim, you have to say the Shahadah which is:
Ash hadu an la illaha illallah, wa ash hadu anna Muhammad arasululah
This means: I testify that there is no god but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is his messenger.

When you say the Shahadah, you have to say it with your heart like you really mean it.

Ask the Imam who Muhammad is. All I can tell you is that he was the last prophet.

Asalamu Alaikum brother, and I hope you learn about Islam!

PS: Don't listen to the people who say bad things about Islam. I've said this so many times. Some people are mean to Islam, when Islam hasn't done anything to them. I'm not talking about you, I'm just talking about the people who say bad things about Islam.

Reading the Quran itself at first might be difficult. Start by reading books like Introduction to or Understanding Islam, The Five Pillars of Islam, The Life of the Prophet Mohammed, Miracles of the Koran. Then I'd suggest to go online www.islamonline.com and www.islamicity.com. You can definately ask an Imam with no problem. He'll be willing to answer any questions.

And for others who are reading: Even if you are not interested in the aspects of Islam, it is strongly recommended that you have a general understanding of what Islam is all about. There are many misconceptions about this religion that should be reviewed, especially in these times. You don't have to agree with it, just learn for your own knowledge. Tolerance in our society is greatly needed and appreciated.

You can certainly go to a local Mosque and personally speak to an Imam. It will not be insulting. The Imam will answer any questions you have to ask and give you the answers you need to know to help you with your journey to the right path in life... Islam.

Remember: A person converting to Islam has all their past sins washed away!!! As if you were a newborn baby.

Actually Islam is a bit different from christianity. I will assume that you were brought up in a christian family because it is easy and common.
There is no central hierachy in Islam, the connection they have with god is directly through the Quran. You are supposed to read the Quran and interpret it for yourself. Of course there are people whe can help you to interpret it but if you go to see one of these people then your experience will be colored by that persons own perceptions of what the Quran says.
The best way is just to read it for yourself.
But you can most definately go to see an Imam, and they will help you as much as they can. Same like a christian priest.
Just make sure that you go in full dress, don't wear shorts or short sleeves. Wear something that covers up everything but your hands and face.

Why avoid the obvious? Read the Quoran. Anything else, including talking to an Imam, is getting a personal view second hand.

Just like if you wanted to learn Christianity, you would start with the New Testament or better still the Old and New Testaments.

Ther are many ways. Going to a mosque and just observing a service from the back, attending a seminar, books, the internet, or just ask a Muslim. They usually are delighted to talk of their faith. IF you make it clear you are truly searching about their religion for pure reasons, not ridicule, etc.

Don't plan on getting married. No normal non Muslim woman would marry you.

You must pray five times a day.
Can not eat with your left hand.
Certain foods are restricted.
You should learn to read and speak the language.
That way you can memorize the Koran.
You can't wear gold--silver is ok.
Females must stay covered.
Males and females are not allowed together in the Mosque.

I would first go to a book store and buy some English publications about Islam and the Koran.

What's wrong with the net? Find a mosque and talk to an Imaam in that case. Imaams are supposed to help Islam spread, if you are genuinely interested in converting they will answer your questions gladly.
