No while a lot of times the options are limited the food in the military is actually quite good. A little bland but still pretty good.

Most military food is great!
Of course it depends on where you are...Army, Air Force, Navy chow halls are all a little different. Some contract to civilian cooks, others are all military cooks. If not enough people are eating at a chow hall, it looses money and can't offer a large variety.
If you're downrange, the KBR chow halls are Off The Hook! The best $25 million ever spent by the U.S. government was for KBR chow halls!

I did 15 years in the Navy: Dining at the Recruit Training Center, NAS Pensacola, NAS Memphis, NAS North Island, and NAS Atusgi, Japan... all those mess-halls were fine.
I deployed with helicopter detachments on over 19 ships, and only had ONE ship (USS Denver) that I actually didn't find the food satisfactory. I later did cruises on 4 carriers and found ALL that food delicious (I was now in the wardroom).
USS Reuben James (FFG-57) won the Navy's food-service award while I was deployed on her in 1989... delicious chow.

Food at the Chow Hall is good, especially at MCRD San Diego and 29 Palms. MRE's are sometimes good in taste but they are so unhealthy for you compare to regular food.

In general, military food is prepared so as to offend nobody. This means the the food is ok but not very original.
The worst food I ever had was 'T-rations.'

No always. Actually it is more a lack of variety. The menu is pretty limited in lots of places.
I know that aboard ship, I would get so sick and tired of seeing certain things day after day and week after week.
But, as for being as bad as the TV sitcom's make it out to be, nah!
