depends. my old neighbors had a dog that could jump any fence, but hated being inside all day. he preferred it outside, but they knew he would get out. so they attached a clothesline through their whole yard and had a lead on so he could go through the whole yard, but not near the fence. he seemed perfectly happy. and they never left him a long time.
but people who leave their dogs like this when it is obvious they are suffering or unhappy are wrong. some dogs love the outdoors for a while, but a lot of them want to be where you are. they bark, they cry, they dig, they chew everything, do all these things b/c they are bored of the same thing everyday.
i understand a long lead in the backyard so your dog cant get out, for short periods of time.i also understand it if you have a clean managed backiyard. some people leave their dogs in places i dont even want to be in. but all day everyday, with no other type of stimulation? very wrong to me

I don't think it is a good idea. I think it is best to keep a dog indoors if owners are not home. But if they have to leave the dog outside when they are not home, It is best to have a good privacy fence that the dog can't escape from. But even this has risks, dogs might find a way to escape the fence, or someone might steal their dog out of their yard. My dog stays indoors when we are not home. But the chain is the worst of all. Dog's can get caught and hang themself. And there is no barrier between them and other dogs and people walking by. An aggressive dog could walk by and attack the chained dog, or a person could walk by, and the dog might not like that person. And if a dog is frightened they have a flight or fight system. But a dog who is on a chain can't run away from a threatening situation, so they might Bite instead. That is why a very high percentage of dog bite cases are by dogs who are chained up. I would just stay away from a chain all together, if you are not supervising your dog.

I would hope that if someone had to chain up their dog outside that they would be actively trying to better the situation. Build a fence, dog proof the house/yard, put the dog through obedience class or whatever else it is that you would have to do to keep from chaining your dog up.
If for some reason you feel that it is absolutely necessary to chain your dog up, maybe the dog needs a new home. I just don't think that a dog deserves to be tied up. Its just sad. There are too many things that could happen to the dog if it is left alone tied up, even if it is on a run. They can get tangled up and not be able to get to food or water or worse...choke.

No, I don't think it's mean unless the dog is unable to seek shelter, move freely w/a leadrope or can't reach food/water. My aunt has her dog stay on a leadrope because she'll jump out of the backyard fencing. The dogs have about a 5 foot neck lead that is connected to the clothesline type of 60 foot line - they can reach water, shelter, food, and can play.

Actually over the years there have been a number of observations that chaining dogs out can be detrimental to their temperament. It is very frustrating to have something holding your neck at a specific distanct and be frustrated by something beyond that reach. It can actually be very damaging physically as well - there are many instances I have known of dogs that have gotten tangled in their tie outs and caused serious damage, broken limbs and crushed larnyx, as well as deaths, so it isn't terribly safe at all. It isn't about comparing dogs to humans -- any living creature is frustrated and can cause serious damage to themselves when tied/chained out. Frequently the frustration level can be such that they will actually do damage to themselves to try to escape - while dogs can and do escape from fenced enclosures, they don't suffer the frustrations that being tied to a specific length does and constantly having to fight with something holding onto them. If you can't fence your yard sufficiently to contain the dog and you are incapable of properly training it to be a good housedog (which frankly isn't that difficult) then at least get a covered dog yard type enclosure - even that is less frustrating to a dog (or any animal) than being tied.

Yes it is wrong to chain your dog outside for any length of time. There is so much that can happen to your dog. Your dog needs proper exercise where they need room to run. What about socialization? I could go on.

Where I keep three of my horses, they have two Doberman Ps and a German Shepherd kept on chains. They are not chained all the time and they also have access to water, food and their own kennel. They are without exception, happy healthy dogs.
They wouldn't be if they were playing around the horses feet and were kicked or trampled. As it is, they are easily put in their kennel and the gate shut for their own safety and the safety of the horses. They are not always on chains but they are during the day time, when lots of people and traffic / horse and motor, is around.
I wish people would stop saying "how would you like to be .... " Dogs are not human, they are canines. We don't rip out our love rivals throat, or chase our own tails, or run and fetch sticks. We are in charge because we have higher intellect. We should never abuse it but sadly we do; in every walk of life. Some people sell their kids for sex! Having a dog on a chain is not inherently cruel - it might be in some circumstances but not always.
If the dog is happy, let them be.

Yes. Very wrong. Any number of things can happen to a chained dog left unsupervised. He can escape. Other people and animals can come into the yard and torment him. He can get tangled up. He can get caught on something and end up choking himself to death with his collar. A small child can wander into the yard and end up getting bit.
If you can't take the time to train a dog to be well-behaved indoors, and can't put up a fence for when he has to be outdoors, then you really should reconsider owning a dog. Dogs are not an appropriate pet for everyone.

You know, I dont agree with alot of these people on here. NO, it is not wrong depending on how your dog acts when it's chained. I have one dog who would just not have it, and the other is perfectly happy and prefers to be outside. A dog being outside is not cruelty. If Im not mistaken dogs were not always living inside, they were bred for outside things. Where ever your dog is happy is going to be fine. If its extremely cold or hot, just accomodate so that it's comfortable. Its not wrong!

It all really depends on how the owners treat'em. Its sad that they cant move around or jump around but, if its safe for them and they are happy dogs the rest of the day. Its ok with me.
