They would tear their shirts in grief over tragedy and if they had sinned they would fast and sit in ashes. When Jesus came and paid the price for our sins, we began to live under grace. John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life."

It was an outward display of their grief. A way to humble themselves before God. Many different purposes, not only would they do it because of a sin the committed against God, but look at Job, he did it because of despair, and in humility to God, knowing that God had a purpose for all he was going thru.

People used to rent their garments a lot back in the olden days. I guess it was a form of self-expression,sort of cry for help.

Don't you have the urge to rip your clothes off when having a strong emotion? Maybe it has something to do with angry sex.
and perhaps cutting didn't exist back then.

Every other person? Not sure about that phrase.
Because mentally ill people or those under extreme stress sometimes act violently, then and now. Nothing has changed in that regard.

Upset that the scene would have to be so displeasing to God.
Ashes on their head, and torn garments, and God know who ever did that saw all that was displeasing to him, as they were there not to do such.
