Usually if the person is very old, they ask, how aggressive do you want us to be. Do you want a Do Not resuscitate on her chart. they asked that when my 80 year old mother was sick and I replied, very aggressive, and Do Resuscitate. She lived three more years, and was very interested in life. Doctors sometimes let treatment slide, only keeping the patient comfortable if the quality of life is not good. Discuss this with your brothers and sisters. And ask what would your Mom want you to do.

Clostridium difficile IS very serious and the elderly are much more prone to contracting it than younger people. It actually happens when your body has been depleted of all the good bacteria, usually when there has been some antibiotic overkill during a hospital stay. The ironic thing is the way to combat it is with more antibiotics, the most effective being flagyl. It is a VERY strong antibiotic that can usually get c. diff under control. If it has seriously eaten away at her colon, an operation might be in order but I don't know what her other diagnoses are. As a family, you have to make that decision on your own. Is she being properly treated? In my profession, I would definitely advise getting a second opinion. It can't hurt and there may be avenues this doctor has not tried yet. Above all, do what you know is best for your mother. I will say, in my experience, that c.diff is not necessarily a death sentence and people do come out of it just fine. Good luck and god bless you, whatever you decide, I know this is difficult!!

I am so sorry to hear this. What dreadful situation for you and your siblings. I would think that they will not operate while she is in such a frail condition but without knowing how bad the bowel condition is it is not possible to speculate. Only a skilled doctor can make that decision and I feel you must be guided by their advice. My thoughts and good wishes are with you.
