Are there any shotguns out there that would work for both? I was thinking of these one. Thanks.

I have an 870 and it performs pretty reliably for hunting birds. As far as home defense...any intruder would be scared completely out of his/her wits hearing the slide on a pump action shotgun being cycled. It should be more than effective enough.

If you are looking for a dual purpose Shotgun, I think you can't do better than the Remongton 870 Express Pump Shotgun.(The one in your Walmart ad is set up for Turkey Hunting with a 21" barrel) If you are going to use it for hunting upland game, like Rabbits, Squirrels, Phesants,Grouse, Quail etc you can always buy one with a 28-30" barrel that comes with 3 different screw in chokes that you can hunt most any game with, other than Deer. You could also buy an 870 Express with an Improved Cylinder 18" barrel which is the perfect "home defense" barrel length and at the same time the Improved Cylinder choke on this barrel is perfect for shooting rifled slugs out of for Deer Hunting. Whatever one you buy ,all you do is by and extra barrel and you can literally have 2 guns in 1.

I suggest and recommend the Remington Express 870 because for the money, it is a quality manufactured and totally reliable shotgun that will do everything you need and more. The Mossberg 500 is is also a good shotgun but it is a less expensive "COPY" of the 870 Express to begin with. The quality difference will be obvious if you shop and compare these two shotguns in person. I sell Remington 870 Express shotguns 10-1 over any other brand in my shop. Remington 870 is also the #1 shotgun used by Law Enforcement and Federal agencies all over the U.S. There are literally dozens of accessories you can buy from from different stock designs...Pistol Grip,Folding Stocks, Synthetic, Camoflauge, barrels, magazine extensions
You can get one for just under $300 and even cheaper when they are on sale or being promoted..Check them out at Cabela's,Bass Pro Shops, Dick's Sporting Goods, Academy Sports, Sports Authority etc.

As an avid hunter and a former officer, I can Highly recommend the 870 Rem. Dual Rail slide, Positive feed and lock up and a after market replacement cartridge carrier is available that will allow you to easily clear a 'double shuck'.
The pump is a more positive feed over the auto loader and can be manipulated more quickly. (shoots faster). Proper training with the weapon can be advantageous when being forced to use the weapon inside a residence. If you are familiar with the use of a shotgun in hunting, then I indeed recommend this weapon. If on the other hand you are not familiar with the weapon, or haven't done much shooting, As recommended a couple of days ago, a Double Barreled shotgun may be a better choice.

The Remington 870 is a great shotgun for hunting, police and defense. You could even get an extra barrel strictly for home defense, something like an 18 n 1/2" or 20" length barrel. It was in the news a couple of weeks ago that some guy held two burglars at shotgun point for the police in nearby Sugarland, TX. I think he had a Winchester pump. Same difference, like someone else said, racking a shotgun pump is very intimidating.

Best.

There are several. The final choice is always up to you.

Many like the remington 870.
I have a mossberg 500 combo with 3 barrels, (18 1/2" for defense with the 'pistol' grip , 26" 'cylinder choke' for general use and/or slugs , 30" full choke for goose, which had to be ordered direct from mossberg .)

I also have a fair number of other weapons as I shoot a lot at different things and at ranges up to 1000 yards.

When you are betting your life you want to have one chip that says Remington 870; it is a sure winner. I have one with interechangable chokes for various hunting modes; I also bought a 19" barrel at a gun show that I put on it when I slide it under the bed, in case somebody wakes me up in the wee hours coming through the bedroom window or something like that. When you rack the slide it is a call to prayer for any transgressor.

I'm a great fan of the Remington 1100 series. If home defence is important to you go for the minimum legal barrel length.

Longer barrels are better for hunting but unless you're an expert shot the difference is to small to matter. Your local gun shop will be happy to advise. I recommend a specialist rather than the sporting goods section of your local Wal-Mart.

I have a Stevens 311 SXS 16 guage that I use for both hunting and home protection.......I understand wanting a pump shot gun as the picture you posted, but here's one thing I personally don't like about a pump in a home defence situation........I load my side by side with 1 slug and 1 double odd buck shot, why?.......1st I want to stop them(buck shot)...And if I have to kill, then I have the slug to finish the job IF needed.......The side by side gives you choices, -vs- just "shooting"......And as 4 hunting I don't take anything else out besides my trusty old sweet 16, I like the way she points, balances, and shoots...........

Look at the Mossberg Maverick for only $160.00 For hunting & home defense.** It has great reviews from people who have bought it.* They should have it at Walmart.*
