I'm thinking of spending a few days in NY between Christmas and New Year, including doing Time Square on New Years Eve.

Am I mad? Would I get a hotel without selling a kidney? Is there much open that week?

Everything is open as normal in New York it's New York after all. We are going for Christmas and it hasn't cost up too much. 7 nights is 500 pounds each and we are flying from London too.

Times Square on NYE's is not something I would want to do. You have to arrive there about 1pm and there are no loo's. I suppose one other way to be in Times Sqaure is to book a hotel there.

Enjoy

forget time square. it is totally chaotic boring and overrated. Plus you can tevo the whole thing on your television and watch it later . but if you make it to the west village, around meat packing district and w 12th, and life is pretty fun. and actually you can do some great bar hopping for not that must cost either. and all very upscale. Check out the velvet rope options to see if you can get on list vip. normally most clubs post a NYE fee of like $200/ person to get in, though you can purchase the tickets earlier (like a month earlier) not the same evening or it would be sold out. but if you want to experience some posh hip, (or sometimes not so hip) nye parties, that would be the best way to party with the stars. otherwise just have fun in the meatpacking. All the hotels will be expensive that should be obvious. but any hotel anywhere on NYEve is going to be expensive. so enjoy it! Cabs should be plentiful.

as far as clubs go check out the following page, a few are already listing their tickets for New Yerars.
kind of a mix of clubs.
the ones that would be fun though pricey
plumm
bed
duvet
40/40
butter
bungalow 8
cain

hotels,
there are cheap ones
and even hostels

of the chic : Gainsvoort Hotel right on w12th
or Soho Grand Grand St
to name a couple.
a great and actually pretty reasonable hotel is the Kitano up on Park Ave. very clean, upscale, but not over the top.

any of them I would say call now and book.

the hostel that know of is on W20th between 7th and 8th Ave in Chelsea. It is a real hostel like in Europe. the people that stay there are normal traveling people. lots of european students. but the price is right. seems clean.

all depends on what you are looking for.
regardless you will spend alot of money but probably will have a lot more memories if you do something different that hang in time square.

Not so much difficult as insane. The cram roughly a million people into two blocks of street. Wherever you stand, that's where you are. Forget about getting out of the crowd to eat, drink, or go to the bathroom.

As far as room prices go. You *might* get one that is still available, but figure you're going to pay top dollar for it. I would look and book NOW though, many people book these rooms a year in advance.

LOL I think the rooms are going to be pretty packed that weekend because a lot of people from around the world come to Times Square just to see the ball drop so you really should book your room now.

I wouldn't do it. Times Square will be ridiculous - too crowded and you'll be standing outside in the cold for hours. And if you go to a party somewhere you'll have to make sure it's within walking distance or close to the subway because you will not be able to get a cab.

Use one of the hotel discount sites, book the room now, and yes, NYE in NY is pretty chaotic. But it's also a lot of fun.
