I wasn't in the Army, but I was in the Navy. I was a strict vegetarian from the time I was a freshman in high school till a couple years ago. Certain things were harder for me. During boot camp, I pretty much lived on rice (which was offered at almost every lunch and dinner), peanut butter and vegetables. Afterwards, I was attached to an Army base that ALWAYS had a vegetarian meal offered for every meal.. we had veggie burgers, veggie sausage.. etc. The hardest parts for me, were any time we had to eat MREs or anything like that. I always chose the tuna options since that's about as close to vegetarian as you can get in a MRE, unless someone happens to have the vegetarian ones on hand. I wouldn't say being a vegetarian in the military is any harder than being a vegetarian anywhere else people are trying to provide meals for a bunch of people, like college or something like that. You just have to be especially careful during strenuous training to balance your meals with enough protein from what is offered that isn't meat.

No, its not hard. They have to provide both meals that have both meat and non-meat. I was a vegetarian for a while while I was in, and its perfectly possible. Warning: The amry 's vegetarian foods usually involved high carbs and calories. It isn't always the healthiest choice (which was why I was a vegetarian). However, that does change depending on your post. The better the post, the better the vegetarian meals.
Also, they do have vegetarian MRE's too. So the army does try to cater to vegetarians.
Edit: Wow, since when did ppl hate vegetarians so much? I was looking at the responses and was a little shocked. If you have the heart and guts to serve, thats doing more than over half of the American population. Being a vegetarian isn't going to hinder you in the military and you won't be any the worst soldier for it.

I went basic with a guy that was vegetarian. He did just as good as everyone else. No one ever gave him crap over it. Just because you don't eat meat doesn't mean you won't make it in the Army or any other branch of the service. Its all about the attitude you have towards things, if you believe that you can overcome the challenge than don't listen to what anyone else says and prove that you can.

Do you eat egg products? There are "vegetarian" omelets and stuff. Seriously, the best MREs (field rations) are the vegetarian burgers with barbeque sauce. I've known vegetarians in the Army. Everyone complains about the food and I don't think vegetarians complain more than everyone else.

No it will not be hard to be vegatarian in the army. There are meals that the Army provides that are vegitarian even the MRE's. Now would you get ribbed a little yes. Do not worry about it, you will be fine. I eat meat I think it is good, but you don's don't eat it.

No it is quite possible, they even have vegatarian MRE's, which are among the best MRE's there are, they have the most snacks. Also in the chow halls they have a really good salad bar, and there is almost always chicken being offered if you can eat that. But if not they always have veggies, desert etc. As long as you do not cross in to the extreme and go vegan your ok.

I've never seen anyone who had a hard time being a vegetarian in the army. Not maintaining the diet, or getting made fun of for their diet.

difficult, but not impossible, as long as you are open to the possibility that at some point, you may no other choice but to eat animal protein.
as for the reason you are vegetarian: whatever is the health problem that makes this necessary may, by and of itself, be a Disqualifier.

No, but vegetables and fruit from the military isn't the best. It's the cheapest. So it's possible. But when you go to the field for 1-3 months, what will last longer?
