were trying to switch from formula to cows milk now. i normally would feed her 6 ounces of formula, then a meal right after, but then it didnt matter how much food she ate because she got all the nutrition from formula. so now, when i offer her whole milk before a meal, she'll drink it, but then will hardly eat her food. I know she has to at least have 17 ounces of milk per day. plus, i do give her a vitamin every morning. so,....any ideas on how to handle this?

I suggest weaning from the bottle as well as the formula at 12 months. She can begin to eat and drink from a cup at the same time now. She should be interested in feeding herself a little bit now, too. At 12 months, there are few food items she shouldn't be able to have. Small pieces of banana, Cheerios, soft cheese, cooked carrot pieces, toast, meat loaf, canned pears and peaches, canned mandarin oranges, cooked peas, avocado, and applesauce are some favorites of my own kids and the children I have cared for in my home. 3 meals a day plus 2-4 snacks is a good goal for most 1 year olds. As long as she continues to fill up on milk first, her tummy will probably not be hungry for solids. Try offering her milk during the meal.

I agree with both of these two here, you need to offer her the solid foods before you offer her the bottles as food is the main source of nutrician as she grows! I have four children of my own and with all of them I have offered the solids BEFORE I gave the milk as soon as they started weaning, that way they learn solids are always served before milk bottles but I always offered them juice, water & milk in between meal times, so by the age of 12 months they already had the pattern set for them.

When my son reached 12 months I started offering food before his bottle. At some stage they need to know that food is food and the bottle is a drink not food.

I found giving him food when everyone else ate (dinner time) was good and then his bottle just before bed. It worked wonders for me and him. Of course you should find what works for you and your daughter.

give the food first, and give milk when she wants it. remember you can include yoghurt and milk in porridge and cereals and cooking towards her 17 oz per day.
