I don't know why your sugar cookies did that but here are some things that MIGHT have caused it. Did you remember your flour? How about your eggs?

I made a dessert called Honeycomb Pudding that is liquid going into the oven and is to bubble up and form honeycombs when it's finished. I was doing two things at once and forgot the eggs. It bubbled and bubbled - looked just like Mt. Vasuvius, bubbled up and over the edge of the pan and down into a volcano at the bottom of the oven. The part on the oven floor was the only thing that solidified. When I took the pan out of the oven, everything went back to flat liquid. So possibly forgot the eggs? But they would be like crackers without the eggs and with flour so see if you really used flour. If it had been something else, like powered sugar, it could have done that.

Sounds like your baking powder was to old.
