Personally I can't tell the difference, but wherever you are getting the kitten from should know. So pound/animal shelter staff, pet shop staff, vets and breeders should all know the difference.

I didn't think so. I went to cat websites where it says a male has 2 dots, like this. : and a girl has an upside down explanation point { dot and slash} But when I took my 7 week old kitten in to the vet he said you can'it tell by looking always.and male kittens don't always have balls till they are 5 months . But some do from the beginning.
He stuck a light up his butt area to be sure.
But in the mean time name your kitten Ben and if it has babies change it to Ben Hur. :)
My sister had a kitten that the vet said was male . Turns out Louie was a girl. So even vets don't always know.

Sometimes it is, depending on whether they're developed well. If you know what a semi-colon ( ; ) is, that's what a female looks like under her tail.......2 holes(the bottom one looks like a slit)! The male will only have 1 and will have a soft (almost sack-like) place below that hole, where his testicles will eventually be. Don't worry.....a LOT of people can't tell the difference! Also, wherever you get your kitten...the person you get it from SHOULD be able to tell/show you what you're getting. Good luck, and enjoy your new baby....

No the Female has 1small hump under her butt,Males have 2 humps 1 hump is bigger thats the balls & the other small hump is his penis. When I found my 2 kittens the male was still too small so I couldnt tell if he was male of female until I looked closely.

I had a cat that i was told was female but when i took it to the vet to be neutered he explained that my cat was more Nigel the Nigella, apparently he was deformed and only had one half formed testicle so was hard to tell (also had two extra toes on back foot)

Well, if you can get them to hold still, it's not too hard. However, most kittens are squirmy little things! :D

no, not at all. female "openings" are close together under the tail, boys are further apart to leave space for the testicles to come in later.
