The I.D. plate on my truck gives the "engine code" as J, which is the 223 c.i. Also on the I.D. plate is 114hp @ 3600 rpm. The original Ford shop book says the 223 engine is rated 135hp @ 4000rpm. Why don't the numbers match? Which engine is actually in my truck? Thank you, Steve

During the era mentioned a lot of truck engines were the same cu. in. as the automobile engines, but were rated at less horsepower because the engines were built for torque and not speed. Possibly the orginal Ford shop book might be for autos and not necessarily trucks.

Ones probably net hp and one gross hp, just different ratings for the same engine, the next year they got the 240 or 300 ci, a much better engine..
