I was just watching MYTHBUSTERS and they did a segment on tattoo's and MRI scanners. The iron oxide in the ink can cause problems with the scan results but will not effect your body. EXAMPLE Blisters, Exploding, or such. My questions is there been anyone who has had a MRI or X-ray, or any other medical electronic procedure done to them affect thier tattoos at all? If so what was it? What did it do to the Tattoo?

I have been in medical imaging for over 15 years. I have performed MRIs on tens of thousands of patients with tattoos. I have several tattoos. I have never experienced any problems with my tats, and I am around the magnetic field and RF wavelengths for multiple hours a day. And, I have never had a patient who had a problem with their tattoos. You can actually research this on line, and find many more sources (other that Mythbusters) that says the whole tattoo/MRI problem is b.s......

Yea i agree the only time that people will have problems with tattoo's is if you've been in jail. If you watch house when LL Cool J appeared he was in prison and he had an MRI done and since its a magnetic machine his tattoo's reacted because in jail they use metals in the ink but the only thing that happens is that the ink is pulled in that direction other than that if you haven't been in jail you should have nothing to worry about.

Inks used to contain heavy metals which would make it painful when having an MRI done other than that X-Rays don't use magnets to take pictures.

Iron oxide is still in very many tattoo inks. You can't get those ochres and rusty brown colors without it. It is also in some blacks.

The thing is, almost never does it create a problem with MRI - but it can and does on rare occasion, generally in the form of some transient redness and puffiness. It is because of the magnetic field created during the MRI. It is generally linked to those with eyeliner tattooing because the eye area is so sensitive. This is why I don't use anything for eyeliner except a sumi black.

Iron oxide in the ink is something that hasn't been around for a while - a long while, I believe. As in, think Korean war or earlier. My uncle had a hula girl tattoo from his time in the Navy during WWII and he reported that it tingled a bit when he got an X-ray. It didn't puff, blow up, catch fire or show any visible signs of damage.

It also looked a lot better in his old age than his lungs did from all those years of smoking.

Modern inks don't have a problem as they have no metallic ingredients in them. The one X-ray I've had that touched on a tattooed area didn't give me any sensation whatsoever.

I've had MRI's and X-rays and other procedures..
The hospital didn't even ask me if I had any tattoos.
I have 11, so I think they may have noticed....
Nothing happen at all. The ink we use now is much
different that the ink of 20 - 50 years ago. There are
some designer inks out there, but not many people
are using them. You like to stick with brand names
and what you know is truly safe.

I have a soft tissue disorder so I get MRIs every few months. I have 5 tattoos so far and have not had any problems. Nothing happened to any of my tattoos. The MRI machines have no effects at all.

I had a chest x-ray a year ago and I have a tattoo on the middle of my back. I lived, and my tattoo also survived without any problems.
