Well, my husband started one with our son where every birthday he gets a box of baseball cards. He's three now and has three boxes, naturally. He won't get them to open until he's 12. I want to do something similar for my daughter. She's only 3 months old now, but I can't come up with anything and since you guys have helped before, I'd like some ideas. Thanks.

Wow, great responses! I may do two of these. The charm bracelet and the day out. But I really like the album idea. You guys are great!ty

Charm bracelet.
Add a charm for whatever she is interested in that year.

I'm not a big fan of buying "things" as a special tradition. I would rather see you make the day special by doing something with your daughter. Her interests will change over the years and this would give you an opportunity to share in her interests with her. One year it may be the circus, another year a concert, another year a play, another year making a plate at the pottery shop. If you feel the need for a gift, you could alway buy a hardback book related to her current interest, and write a personal note in the front.

I never really had any Christmas traditions in my family growing up other than the tree, gifts, and food. But I know a lot of people around here get their children red pajamas every year and let them open up that one gift the night b4 Christmas. I am going to try and start that tradition as well as baking cookies the night before for Santa. I am so excited to start new traditions with my girls!

You could get her a piece of jewelry and she gets them when she's twelve. That could be something really special for her, culminating with her getting her ears pierced at 12 and a pair of special earrings for when her ears are healed. Or, if you will pierce them sooner, obviously do that for that special year. Or, instead of a gift, each year you'll spend a day together doing girly things. Obviously for her 1st birthday you can't really do that, but after that you can take her to get her nails done, go to a movie, etc. It'll be a blast and she'll feel SO special! I like the jewelry idea. You don't have to get her something expensive each year, but something she can grow with.

Hmm. What a cool thing you guys have going. How about buying her a special photo album for the year? Females seem to love photos more than males, at least in my experience. Your daughter could put the photos she loves most throughout the year in them. So give her the album when she turns one, then throughout the year, she picks her favorite things, you guys take pictures of them together, then at the end of the year at her next birthday, it's full of all her favorite things of the past year. And she gets a new album for the next year.

Hope this helps.

I'll be excited to see what other ideas you'll get.

Ever since my daughter was 1 yr old we make sugar cookies the day after Thanksgiving. The guys are always watching football, and us girls needed something fun to pass the time.

I give her the flour cannister, cookie dough, rolling pin, and cookie cutters - and let her go crazy. My job is basically the oven. Then when they're cooled off, we decorate them together. It's a blast!

We go shopping in advance for cookie cutters, colored frosting, pre-made cookie dough, and candy for decorating.

Here's a fun story...

As a little girl watches her mom prepare the Easter ham, she wonders why her mother cuts off both ends of the ham before putting it in the pot.
So, she asks why, and her mom realizes that she doesn't know. That's the way her mother prepared the Easter ham.
So they call grandmother and pose the question about cutting off the ends of the Easter ham. Grandmother admits to not knowing either. She just prepared the ham the way her mom did it.

Their next call is to great-grandmother. When they ask her about her method of preparing the Easter ham, she laughs. Then she says, "It was the only way I could get the Easter ham to fit the small pot I had!"

How about a mother daughter day or when she gets older doing charity work together...

How about this:

Every year on her birthday take a picture of the two of you to put in a keepsake box. Along with the picture, write her a little letter. Tell her what happened in the world that year, fun things you did together, and how much you love her.

It will be really fun for her to look back on all that! :)
