OK, this really happened to me so don't get all offended by the specifics.

I'm an atheist. My sister is not. She's been taking her kids to church the last few months and a few weeks back my five year old nephew told me the following: "When I get sick, Jesus pukes and that's how I get better". As an atheist, what should I have done in that situation?

(Also, in that scenario I kinda feel bad for Jesus. That's a lot of puking he has to do every day in order to allow sick people to get better.)

Kindly correct him, or ask him why he would think Jesus has to puke when he does. Does his mother puke when he does? Yet his mother still cares for him and feels bad that her little boy is sick. Church's don't teach kids that Jesus pukes for them, although some parents may say foolish things like this to their kids with the mistaken belief that the child will handle illness better. Christians believe that Jesus is God incarnate, therefore, any healing to be done will come as a result of his will, and he has made us to naturally get well in due time. Scripture still tells us to pray, and of course, God could intervene to expedite matters or do something when medicine cannot.

well, he's five- i'm sure the lesson behind that had something to do with Him dying for us (Jesus died for my sins so that i could go to heaven etc.) but if someone was using that as an example to try and help explain that theory- children that age are very literal. That was probably the part that stuck out in his mind. Or maybe his mother actually believes that- i don't know. But that fact is, is that she is his mother, and she has the right to raise him the way that she thinks is best. At five, i wouldn't worry about it, usually common sense will take over at some point before he gets much older. But it's not really your place to worry about this- now when he is like 11-15 and he still thinks this- then i think you would be fine saying something! but my intuition tells me this was just a bad example to make a point that the child took literally. I wouldn't worry about it- he will turn out fine:)

I would have just told the kid that it's very nice of Jesus to puke for him. Kids can come up with some of the most interesting ideas. :)

Maybe you should just say, I am sorry you do not feel good and I am gad that you think Jesus makes you feel better. You may not be a believer but it is not for you to go against what the parents say.

Maybe your nephew was joking. I've never heard of any religion talking about "puking, etc." I think I would have reacted naturally and laughed my head off at such a bizarre statement.

I would of just said OK, If this is what your sister wishes to teach her child she has the right, you do not have the right however to teach her child anything without her permission.
I assume you are talking about a young child, young children can't always put what they are thinking properly into words.

You should respect the beliefs that your sister is instilling in her children. Just as you wouldn't want anybody to compromise the beliefs of you and your children, you shouldn't compromise the beliefs being taught to them either. The faith of a child may be just what's needed to show you the way to God.

You say, "okay honey," pat him on the head and change the subject or walk away.

No offense but its not your place to try and influence someone elses child who is still so young.
obviously the kid has got things confused, but given time things should straighten out in his head.
