My child had both. I like the uniforms better than the regular clothes. Everyone had the same clothes no one could say theirs were better than yours. The same with shoes.
1: It cut down on the teasing
2: Because the student was not teased it boosted their self esteem and gave them a chance to shine in every way.
3: And because the parents did not have to spend as much money on clothes, they were able to spend more time getting involved in their child's education.

I have worked at schools with uniforms, and at schools that just had a dress code. I see no true difference between the two ideas. Both are designed to discourage and control improper or unsafe attire (gang, slutty, smutty, offensive) and engender an atmosphere more conducive to learning. At least with a dress code the students have some freedom of expression, (within reason).

I would never work in a school system that had no dress code at all!

I like them. I worked near a school that had uniforms. They had several choices of long or shot sleeved shirts, vests, jackets, slacks or skirts for the kids.

The kids had enough choices to express their own individuality or dress for the weather without having to deal will the fashion police of their friends.

I think it is better than having to buy and wear the newest fashion just to be cool. It's easier on the parents wallet too.

tough to answer such a simple question.
to "mandate" conformity can cause rebellion in youth. which in turn can have a lifetime of repercussions.
but at the same time, uniformity can remove outside distractions from what the kids are there to do, learn. if everyone dresses the same, economic and social classes become one, in theory.

personally i wish i had to wear uniforms in school... think about it u dont have to think about what u are going to wear the next day for school. no one can judge anyone for what they are wearing. You dont have to constantly buy new clothes for school. Everyone judges everyone on there personality. So uniforms are not that bad.
