hiccups have no function, they are caused by irritation to the diaphragm, and this usually happens when you eat or drink something too quickly.

Hiccups are caused by a spasm of the diaphram- irregular breathing, usually, could be caused by eating or drinking, gasping for breath, not breathing enough. Sometimes something you drink (likie soda) causes hiccups to re-occur. Hiccups, the spasm of the diaphram, forces excess gas from your stomach and lungs, like a small burp.
