So I recently bought Insignia 5.1 home theatre speaker system which to my surprise only came with 5 speakers and one subwoofer lacking the DVD player. I have one Sony single disc DVD player DVPNS55P/B which has only two RCA sockets (L and R) in the back. Is it feasible to hook up my 5 Speakers and 1 sub cables to the DVD player wihthout separately buying the 5.1 channel box. Thanks

You will need a receiver even for the computer type systems. For bass management and crossover control.

Unfortunately there is no way around it, you need a receiver or amp of some kind. Make sure next time of the connections you will need before making a purchase.

No, the this about "theaters in a box" setups is that they include audio processors for the surround, and amplification all built into a DVD player, if you you replace it, you will need an amp, that's capable of decoding dolby digital or some higher end dvd players will have 5/7 separate audio outs that need amplification. To "Stop Ranting": I think he means his Home Theater in a box setup is toast, and he wants to buy just a DVD player, and hook speakers directly up to it. If the DVD portion of the All in one unit is just broken, but everything else works, then you CAN purchase a seperate DVD player and hook it up to an AUX input on the theater in a box setup. If the whole thing is shot, then no, you can't hook the speakers up to a new dvd player.

You need a receiver or amplifier.

The DVD players, Game system, CATV box, etc., all produce "line-level" signals. These must be fed into a receiver which adds power to drive speakers.

The exception are small 5.1 speaker systems sold for computers like the Logitech units. They are self-powered so they dont need a receiver.

Your best bet is to either buy a AV receiver used or take the Insigina system back and buy a HTIB - system with speakers, sub, DVD player and receiver.
