Not a passport, but you do have to have an ID that is legal and current...it is my understanding that expired IDs will no longer be accepted the way they once were.

The new passport requirements are from travel (driving or otherwise), across the Canadian or Mexican borders, when an ID sufficed before.

No, you will never need a passport to fly from state to state. When traveling from state to state you are not really changing jurisdictions, since everyone in every US state is still under federal jurisdiction, and states exist only by virtue of the US Constitution. A passport is therefore unnecessary when traveling in the United States.

Not in the US. This sounds like a conspiracy theory that someone baked up. If this were real, there would already be a big controversy about it. There would be lawsuits to stop it. If it were real, the government could not just spring it on the US on New Year's Day because something like that would require preparation. Think about all of the people who would be expected to go and get passports. They are easy to get but they take time. If the government did something like pass a law like this and not tell anyone about until right as they wanted to implement it, they would cause the airlines to go out of business overnight. It would take months for everyone to get passports.

Leave it to the US Goverment to mess with the publics head.

No, since Hawaii is part of the United States you do not need a passport. However it is a document that would be worth it if you travel outside of the United States

Other Acceptable Documents

In some cases, other documents may be accepted when entering or re-entering the United States by air.

A limited number of travelers may present either:

Alien Registration Card, Form I-551, Legal Permanent Residents will continue to be able to use their Alien Registration Card (Form I-551), issued by the Department of Homeland Security, or other valid evidence of permanent residence status to apply for entry to the United States.

Merchant Mariner Document (MMD) or “z-card” issued by the U.S. Coast Guard that will be acceptable for use under WHTI by U.S. citizen merchant mariners traveling on official business.

NEXUS Air card in conjunction with the NEXUS program at designated NEXUS sites. The NEXUS program is limited to citizens of Canada and the United States, lawful permanent residents of the United States and permanent residents of Canada. See information on enrolling in the NEXUS program.

U.S. Military Traveling on Orders. There are no changes proposed for members of the U.S. armed forces traveling on active duty. Currently, an individual traveling as a member of the U.S. armed forces on active duty is not required to present a valid passport to enter or depart the United States. Note: Spouses and dependents of these military members will be required to present a passport (and valid visa, if applicable) when traveling into the United States under WHTI.

I carry a photocopy of my original passport, just in case I lose my driver's license. It never hurts to have an additional form of identification.
