“Ofield, who heads SDSU’s Film and Television Department, captured the entire march as the veterans—some walking on crutches and braces, some pushing themselves in wheelchairs— encountered FBI agents, spectators, and counter-demonstrators from the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars who spat on them, accusing them of treason and of “losing the war.”

The great majority of it was done by "hippies"; the protest you are talking about was one by the Vietnam Veteran's Against the War-a small percentage of "Vietnam veterans". A fairly good number of them, including the founder were also not Vietnam veterans. If they were spit on then it was wrong but the sad truth is most of the name calling, spitting and hate towards the Vietnam vets were by the so-called hippies. The "do your own thing" group did not like anyone who disagreed with them very much-my evidence is that I am a Vietnam veteran was called those names and was spit on and never thought it was by an FBI agent or VFW member or another vet. My honest opinion is that many members of the VVAW were traitors and cowards since they were not Vietnam vets and used the fact they were in the military to act like they were. Yes John Kerry was a Vietnam vet, yes he was a member of the VVAW and he was also a liar when he testified before Congress he saw Americans killing innocent civilians ad burning villages, he later admitted he was just passing on information he had been told by other VVAW members, later on during the run for the Presidency he denied ever saying it (fortunately it was taped and in Congressional records).

If the Film and Television Department at San Diego St. had filmed the entire incident, why isn't it on the net? I would help your argument. Are you lying about a spitting incident? You called Vietnam veterans who claimed to be spit on "liars" and "insane".

If you don't want your questions deleted, try to be less insulting when asking them. People might not agree with you, but they will not be turned off by the hurling of insults and slurs.

>This is the fourth time you have brought this up. Maybe it is time to give up.

Due respects, but for the non-enforced YA rules, I’d tell you were you can put movies.

I was in Vietnam. I was also in the streets in San Diego during and after Vietnam. I did a little recruiting at Sand Diego State.

Protesters undermined the military. The vocal minority, as usual, captured the media attention and convinced moronic leaders that it would be better to pull out of Vietnam rather than to just win it. (Sound familiar?)

We had celebrities and even future politicians – most of whom were clean-shaven and rather well kempt – who, either out of naiveté, a desire for popularity, or out hatred for their country, gave aid and comfort to the enemy. (Sound familiar?)

I was aboard an aircraft carrier for a bit and had an opportunity to look at the wire-service news and photos. If a protester… usually a long-haired, hippy-type… was on the ground, he or she had been beaten senseless by the police for exercising his or her Constitutionally guaranteed freedom of expression. If a policeman was on the ground (having been hit by bricks thrown by the peaceful protesters), he was clumsy and slipped (probably in the feces thrown by those same peaceful protesters).

For the record, nowhere in the Constitution… or even in the Declaration of Independence… does it guarantee freedom of expression. And freedom of assembly doesn’t refer to damaging and burning government buildings.

I will agree that ALL the protesters were not hippy. Many were just dumb kids afraid to go to war and die in Vietnam. They rode the hippy shirt tails in the hope of ending the war so they wouldn’t have to go. I know… I talked with some of them.

I have a buddy who was also in Vietnam. He wrote a song some of which goes like this…

. . . It wasn’t the bombs
. . . It wasn’t the blood
. . . Watching our comrades fall in the mud
. . . When I came home on crutches
. . . And looked for my place…
. . . It was the pretty young girl
. . . Who spit in my face.

Personally I was never spat on. But it happened. And in some circles, it's still happening. In some circles people still don't view Vietnam as a war... even an undeclared war. The attitude is, "Oh... Vietnam... I thought you were a veteran."

So, you can play your movies… listen to the media all you want. But while the protesters and their ilk were running down a nation and its military, that very military was fighting to save the nation.

Kid, you can look up history. Read about it all you want. I was there.

First of all, let's clear up a misconception that ignorant hippies such as yourself have about the Vietnam War. We didn't lose it, we quit! This was do to the fact that nasty smelly hippies such as yourself gained too much political power in this country. The guys who fought over there had their enemies beaten on the battle field. I hope our people have more sense than that generation did.

It is 2007. The last of the hippies died with Jerry Garcia. Ask a teenager today "What is a hippie.? He would be "like uh yeah man them stoners from the seventies. I think my mom was one of those., They had this thing like lallapalloza and all got baked on LSD."

I don't think an FBI agent would ever spit on a veteran for one.

For two, I'm republican and I don't consider those people to be hippies...aren't hippies all about love and respect?

Those people are attention starved morons. They want to feel important so they go and protest and spit on people whom they consider to be "worthless".

It's called karma, and everybody will get theirs.

Because it IS the hippies and the anti war crowd.

I myself was spit on at a war protest/SUPPORT THE TROOPS RALLY while in UNIFORM

AM I read in the local paper that there were going to be a number of anti-war protests in my area that evening. I decided to attend...somewhat.

The protest was going to be held in the town square downtown. After work, I went home and changed into my ACUs (Army Combat Uniform).

Picture of ACU here: http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/images/acu-pic04.jpg

I pulled in and parked at the square, got out of the car, and in full view of the protest walked to the opposite end of the square, executed an “About Face”, and stood unmoving at the position of Parade Rest (Feet shoulder width apart, hands interlocked at the small of your back, head and eyes locked straight ahead), and stood there facing them.

People started noticing me and whispering to their friends who turned around to look, some took pictures, and several walked over to talk to me.

They asked my opinion on the war, I replied, “Sir/Ma’am I have no opinion, I am a Soldier”

They asked what I was doing there, I replied, “Sir/Ma’am I am just standing here on a Tuesday Evening.”

A reporter and photographer from the paper came over and asked if they could take my picture, ask me questions, and identify me. I replied, “No Sir”

It must have been quite an interesting sight. A group of 60 people chanting and waving signs against the war at one end of the square...and a Soldier in uniform standing silently facing them on the opposite end.

A few people driving by honked, and the two Police Officers assigned to the protest discreetly got my attention with a wave, then turned their back to the protesters and gave me two thumbs up.

As their protest ended and people started leaving at dusk, I walked back to my car and left.

I had to drive past their protesters on my way out...and a number of them SPIT on my car.

They say they support the troops, but yet when they come face to face with one they spit on him while holding “SUPPORT THE TROOPS” signs.

Their true colors have been revealed in full.

So, my car is now defiled and covered in spit...but I can live with that because I took a stand for myself, my men, and the defense of our Country.
