I just answered a question on what I did with my eyebrows. I answered honestly and said that I plucked them because they can look unrurly (messy). Anyway I got thumbs down for this because in Islam you are not supposed to do this. Which led me think that if you had a top lip mustache would you leave this alone because this is how you are meant to be or would you thread (bleach, wax) these?

Okay, I'll get thumbs down for this but I will still say what I have to say.

There are many kinds of Muslims... some are more reserved than others... some believe in some "hadeeths" while others think that those same "hadeeths" are not solid and were not said by Prophet Mohammed.

I am confused why most of the Muslims who are replying in this forum all come from the same background and beliefs.

I am a Muslim - and I pluck, wax, thread my eyebrows without the slightest belief that I may be doing something wrong. And it's not just me - MOST of the Muslims I know are like me. I do know some who do not clean their eyebrows for religious reasons, but it's the minority - at least in my surroundings.

Now please don't get me wrong. I'm not against any of the people here or their beliefs of not cleaning their eyebrows… I'm just saying that although we are all Muslims, we do have some differences when it comes to our beliefs.

The same thing can be applied to cleaning your upper lips. You'll find all sorts of points of views. Some will say it's not okay. Some will say it's only okay when it's extreme, and others, like myself, will say it's okay anyway.

I hope I clarified your confusion at least to some extend. :)

Though I didn't see the question and answer you are referring too I am inclined to answer this one sister.

The eyebrows are specifically mentioned in hadeeth saheeh as not permissible to pluck....upper lip hair is not mentioned. The hadeeth (and there is more than one)that says to not pluck the eyebrows does not say, 'don't do so because this is how you are meant to look'.

Anyhow, most scholars say if a woman has 'freaky' (my word lol) eyebrows it is permissible to tame them (I am not trying to issue a fatwa here just telling what I have read from several scholars on the subject). Most scholars also say it is permissible to remove that hair which is in between the brows (that hair that creates a uni brow).

The two things, eyebrows and upper lip hair are two separate issues.

May Allah reward you with good.

The top lip is ok the eyebrows are a no no. BUT I have heard several sheikhs say that you can pluck the "extras" whatever that means.

Removal of women's facial hair

Question:
What is the Islamic ruling concerning the removal of women's facial fair - specifically, the upper lip, if the hair is very visible or obvious? Is it permissible to remove it, or is does it come under the category of plucking? What about hair on the legs and arms?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

There is nothing wrong with a woman removing hair from her upper lip, thighs, legs and arms. This is not included in the category of plucking which is forbidden.

I have to respectfully disagree. The reason one doesn't pluck eyebrows is due to hadith, NOT because we are altering what God gave us. I have read this in MANY books and heard it in lectures too. Bleaching hair is allowed.

I'm only going to give one link for reference. If you want you can just type out plucking eyebrows Islam in google and get a slew of others.

http://www.islamqa.com/index.php?ref=4610&ln=eng&txt=eyebrows

Now what one does or doesn't do is up to them. I have at times plucked but it's been a long time since I have done that.

Edit: this link mentions changing Allah's creation but elsewhere I have often read it has more to do with being humble than anything else.

If you were wearing the full Burka like you're supposed to, nobody would even care how much wax you use on your moustache!

[But, we are allowed to get rid of upper lip hair because it is not natural for a woman to have a mustache.]

It grew there naturally, so how is it not natural?

Muslim :: Book 24 : Hadith 5301
'Abdullah reported that Allah had cursed those women who tattooed and who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck hair from their faces and those who make spaces between their teeth for beautification changing what God has created."

Dawud :: Book 32 : Hadith 4038
The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) forbade ten things: Sharpening the ends of the teeth, tattooing, plucking hair, men sleeping together without an under garment, women sleeping together without an under-garment, men putting silk at the hem of their garments like the Persians, or putting silk on their shoulders like the Persians, plundering, riding on panther skins, wearing signet rings, except in the case of one in authority.

It is not sunnah to pluck hair from the face for beautification..

want to add that just because some Muslims do not follow their religion does not mean they are correct. The Quran says that those who believe follow and do as the Prophet Mohammed(SAW) did..

bleaching the moustache is totally okay, who said it is not?
as for the eyebrows: you can bleach them too but it is considered as imitating the kufr so it is better to let it "grow"

edit: please try to put questions like this into another category next time.. this section is for our holiday and not for moustaches AstagfiruAllah

We are not to pluck our eyebrows.

But, we are allowed to get rid of upper lip hair because it is not natural for a woman to have a mustache. So this is not a sin...

I, do take hair off my upper lip because it was beginning to become too much. From what I read, it is not a sin. But if it was, I would probably not.

The beauty of a woman:
Is not in the clothes she wears,
the figure that she carries,
or the way she combs her hair,
or the style she does make up.
The beauty of a woman:
must be seen in her Hijab, and her eyes,
because that is the doorway to her heart,
the place where love resides.
The beauty of a woman:
is not in a facial mole,
but true beauty in a woman,
is reflected in her soul.
The beauty of woman is in her modesty.
And the real glamour of her is her honesty.
It is the caring that she lovingly gives,
the passion that she shows.
And the beauty of a woman,
with passing years - only grows!
